Sand and Finish the Wood

If you’re working with wood, you’ll want to give the pieces a good sanding. You can use a belt sander or random orbit sander for this step.

The best way to ensure even results is by using a sanding block, which allows you to hold the piece steady and work on it evenly. This will help prevent splintering and unevenness in your finished product.

Sanded surfaces should be completely smooth before finishing begins; any small bumps or dents could create issues later on in the process of painting or staining the furniture piece.

Join the Boards Together to Form a Solid Panel

To join boards together to form a solid panel, you’ll want to use one of the following methods:

Biscuit joiner. This is the simplest method and works best for small projects. The biscuit cutter has two flanges that shear off when inserted into the board and glue is applied to them. 

The joints can be very strong if glued properly, but they are not as aesthetically pleasing as other methods (the biscuits show on your finished project).

Router and dado stack. This method gives you an incredibly strong joint that’s almost invisible once it dries. All you have to do is cut dadoes in both pieces using a router with a dado stack then run glue along their entire length before pressing them together so that they form an interlocking joint similar in appearance to a tongue and groove joint (see below). 

If done correctly, this type of joint can rival mortise-and-tenon joints when it comes time for strength testing!

Cut and Rout the Panel to Size

If you have access to a table saw, router and jigsaw, that’s great. If not, don’t worry! There are plenty of other options. The first thing to do is cut the panel to size:

Table Saw: With a 24″ perimeter fence and a crosscut sled (for cutting smaller pieces), this will get the job done quickly and accurately with minimal fuss. Just remember to double-check your measurements before starting!

Circular Saw: A circular saw can be used in place of a table saw if you’re careful about measuring and cutting angles properly. You can also use it for straight cuts when you have time on your hands and don’t mind making multiple passes through thick material like plywood or MDF.

Jigsaw: This tool is best suited for thinner panels made from softwoods like pine or balsa wood because their blades tend to dull faster than metal ones used on routers or table saws (see below). 

Attach the Legs and Mount Your Furniture Piece in Place!

Attach the legs to the base. To add stability and durability, it is recommended that you use wood glue when attaching legs to a base. 

You can also use screws for added strength and security, especially if your furniture piece will be used as a permanent fixture in your home.

Attach the legs to the top. After attaching all four legs in place on either side of your furniture piece, attach these pieces together by using wood glue or screws if desired (for added strength).

Mount your finished project in its intended location and level it out before securing it with finishing nails or tacks through each corner of its frame into wooden blocks placed underneath each leg’s base. 

If you have trouble leveling out your finished project due to its size or weight, there are many specialty levels available online that offer greater accuracy than traditional levels do; these may help ensure that everything looks good from every angle once installed!

Cover and Protect the Top

You can prevent finish cracking, which will make your piece look old and worn, by using a quality primer and paint. Use a quality finish as well—one that’s durable enough to withstand daily use and abuse over time. 

If you want to ensure that your finished piece looks great for years to come, don’t leave out protection! A good sealer should be used in addition to any other protective measures you take (like waxing or polishing). 

This way, you won’t have to worry about things like water damage or fingerprints ruining the look of your custom furniture piece.

Staining and Finishing the Base Material

Once you’ve cut your base material to size and determined the orientation you want to use, it’s time to stain. Staining can be done in any process, so long as you have a good quality stain that matches your base material. 

If the stain doesn’t match perfectly, don’t worry you can use clear coat over top of the stained parts later on.

Stain before assembling!

When applying stains, always apply them before assembly. This ensures that all sides of each piece are stained uniformly and precisely (stains typically dry within 24 hours).

Gluing the Wood Veneer to the Surface of Your MDF Top Panel

With all of your pieces cut and sanded down, you will start to glue your veneer onto the surface of your panel. 

The first thing that you need to decide is which glue you are going to use. There are many different kinds of glues, but they can be broken down into two categories: those that are designed for wood veneer and those that are not. If you use a non-designed glue like Elmer’s Glue-All, then it might leave a yellow stain on your wood veneer over time. 

On the other hand, if you use something like Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue – Waterproof Formula (the best there is), then this won’t happen at all! 

You want something between these two extremes; one that sticks well but doesn’t leave any stains behind after drying up completely (like an epoxy).

For our example project we went with 3M Super 77 Spray Adhesive because it seemed like the best option overall given how cheap it was compared to other options such as Gorilla Glue or Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue – Waterproof Formula (not only did we spray paint our project afterwards but also spent less money doing so).

Trim, Cut and Sand Edges of New Wood Veneer Top

Now that you’ve got your new wood veneer top, it’s time to trim and cut the edges. Use your table saw to make a small cut in the edge of the plywood so that you can sand away any rough spots and chipping from being transported from the store. 

Then, use a hand plane or palm sander on an orbital sander if you have one available, but make sure not to go too far into each edge. If you want perfection, this will take some time so be patient!

Sealing, Sanding and Refinishing Veneered Panels

After you’ve completed the veneering process, you should give your panel a thorough cleaning and refinishing. 

This will ensure that it holds up to wear and tear in the long term. Here are a few tips for getting this done:

Use a sealer to protect your project from moisture damage, which can cause stains or warping.

Sand the surface with 200 grit sandpaper using a sanding block to smooth out any hard edges or imperfections in the wood’s finish (you can find these at home improvement stores). 

You should also use this method if you want to apply another layer of veneer over your project later on down the road; however if you do want more than one layer, make sure that each subsequent layer is applied at least 12 hours after applying an initial coat so that they can dry properly before bonding together. 

Be careful not to sand too aggressively though—it’s better if there are some tiny bumps left rather than completely smooth surfaces because they’ll act as tiny grout lines between sheets once they’re bonded together! If necessary, use some fine steel wool on small areas of damage such as scratches or water damage spots until they’re gone completely.”
